I’ve also seen a couple Pop Warner football games where some little directionally-challenged running back proudly scampered into the opponent’s end zone. Oops!
Q: If the ball is handed off to you in a football game, what is it that keeps you from scoring a touchdown every time you receive the ball?
A: Eleven opponents, each trying to knock you down and keep you from reaching your goal!
Q: But if you took the handoff, turned around, and ran toward your opponent’s goal line, would your opponent try to knock you down and keep you from running into his end zone?
Your teammates may shout at you or run after you saying, “Turn around! You’re going the wrong way!” But your opponents will laugh and enjoy your foul-up. Unfortunately, your team would suffer as you put points on the scoreboard for the enemy.
Isn’t this a picture of how Satan works? When you are trying to gain ground against him, he and his teammates try to knock you down and keep you from scoring points against them. But if you turn your back on your team (the Lord and your fellow Christians), Satan will gladly allow you to run into his end zone and score points for his team.
Some of your teammates may shout “Wrong way,” or “Turn around”, but it looks so easy to run into the opponent’s end zone. The devil will cheer you on, but will laugh you to scorn. And your team will suffer as you put points on the scoreboard for the enemy.
“Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7. He is recruiting you for his team. He is promising many benefits if you play for him. But he is a liar – the “father of lies,” and he will use you, discard you and laugh you to scorn.
“There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” Proverbs 14:12
If the enemy is not trying to knock you down, maybe you’re running toward the wrong goal! Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
